Our volunteers always tell us how much they enjoy taking part in life at Scotts.  Recently one of our team said, 

"I think the biggest difference I make is in the Development Centre class where I help on Monday afternoons.  In particular, trying to help ensure that the non-verbal communicators get their say."

Tonbridge Grammar School and the Scotts Project Trust

For over 10 years the trust and TGS have enjoyed a long collaboration. Every week we are invited to participate with a number of different sessions ranging from Photography master classes, Singing sessions and British Sign Language lessons to mention only a few.

The interaction between our students and the Scott’s service users holds great value. As part of the International Baccalaureate all TGS students are required to engage in a range of service led projects. The Scott’s Project offers our students the opportunity to learn in a real life situation. It takes away the fear of disability allowing the students to open their minds and celebrate equality.

We are very grateful for the opportunities offered to us by the trust and look forward to many more adventures.  Sam Twinham, TGS

We asked a few of our students to comment:

A few weeks ago I ran a sign language session at the Scotts Project in Tonbridge. Seeing as it was the week before the Easter holidays, I thought it would be a fun idea to have an Easter themed session. I created a few activities in the style of 'Where's Wally' where everyone had to find the different coloured Easter eggs. I learned and then taught everyone all the signs of things related to Easter (such as rabbit, chick, egg, chocolate etc etc) and then finally we did an Easter egg hunt. I find the sessions so rewarding as it is a very special feeling to see everyone enjoy something you're doing so much. It is definitely an experience I will never forget.

I was lucky enough to run a Scott's session a few weeks ago in which I chose to cover numbers. I thought it would be a fun idea to play a colourful game of bingo with bingo boards the Scott's students made and coloured themselves. Everyone got stuck in and practiced the signs. As well as learning the number signs I discovered that there are 3 different variations of BSL numbers used across the UK. I chose number set one because it is the most common. Although I was nervous, the people at Scott's put me at ease and it was a joy to see their excitement during the activities. I think the session was well received by all and I can't wait until next time!

I really enjoy going to Scott’s every Thursday and it is always the highlight of my week. Planning and running the sessions is also really enjoyable and I like to think of creative ways to get them to learn the sign language. The last session I planned was based on food. After learning the signs, each person was given a paper plate and photos of food, in which they had to create their ideal meals. There were some strange ideas, such as pizza and pasta for breakfast. Running the sessions also allows you to talk to everyone in the group that week. Scott’s has not only provided a lot of fun, but it has allowed me to develop a new skill that I am able to use in the future, to communicate with a wider range of people.
